Nurse Extern Program This program is a clinical work experience for nursing students or recently graduated nurses. Externs are paired up with preceptors who will provide opportunities for the Externs to learn a range of things from basic entry level tasks to more advanced and complicated RN functions. The Nurse Extern Program provides an opportunity to relate nursing theory to real, clinical practice. The Externs will also develop time management skills and problem solving techniques. Additionally, Externs will gain priceless experience and confidence in themselves from participation in the NHS Nurse Extern Program. Externs will have to commit to a 10 week program of either part time or full time work with a preceptor. If the program is completed successfully, additional time may be awarded either immediately after the initial 10 weeks or laterduring semester breaks. Externs are typically first to be considered for permanent, full time positions that are open if he/she is qualified and have passed the NCLEX. Externs earn a very competitive hourly wage. Externs recently graduated from an RN program who have not taken the NCLEX receive a higher hourly wage than undergraduate Externs. To qualify, Externs must be either enrolled in a nursing school and be in the last year of an RN program and have a current BLS certification or be a recent graduate of an RN program and not have taken the NCLEX yet and have a current BLS certification. Externs must complete a "general" on-line application, submit a clinical skills checklist from last rotation, a copy of his/her BLS certification, a letter of interest and a resume to the Director of Employee Services.
